At what age should I not have long hair anymore?

I have shoulder length hair and am almost 40. My cousin tells me I need to have short hair because I am too old to have long hair. I think that's very "old" fashioned thinking. Is it unactractive for 40 year olds to have longer hair? It's only to my brastrap. It's clean and styled. And it's way easier to take care of long. (btw - she has her tongue pierced and she's 40 also)
