She says it's hard to brush b/c it's hard to reach. She don't really think about what she looks like. She is 12 %26amp; in the 6th grade. She sort of has a desire to cut it. But her parents are controlling %26amp; desire her to have long hair for the attention they get. "Your daughter has such long hair!" What can she do about this? She has taken it upon herself to cut it. Very badly I have to admit. I evened it out for her and it looks much nicer now. But I can't seem to get her to brush it out every day. By Sunday her hair is ratty nest. She needs some advice as do I on this matter. She is sitting beside me now. Please respond...

Try changing to a different conditioner. It sounds like she has the thing, delicate kind of hair that gets knotted by even the faintest gust of wind. I had the same problem when I was in the 4th grade. I just hated brushing my hair because it was too long and it hurt too much. What worked for me was a really good-smelling conditioner--one of those "No Tears" kinds of conditioners--and a brush that had a lot of straight-line, thin, shiney-black plastic bristles as opposed to those standard, thicker bristled-brushes that have circles at the tops of every single bristle.

Also, if it hurts to brush it, try using the technique of holding a bit of hair in one hand and brushing it in the other. When you move the brush over the hair, the tension (and pain) stops where the hand is gripping the hair; next to no pain is felt at the root of the hair, on the scalp.

When I was younger I had the same problem, but I just eventually got tired of all the knots in my hair and a few more minutes out of my day with a good brush made all the difference. With long hair like that have her put her hair to the side and brush, that way she can reach.

this is something she needs to talk to your hubby about. If he is OK with her cutting it he needs to talk to his ex about getting it cut. you could always braid it after she washes it or before going to bed that helps to keep the knots out or put it up in a bun. My daughter does this with my granddaughters hair. If she can't reach it then either you or her father should be helping her. I know my mom used to do this when i was younger.

Ok Ladies: First get the hair cut professionally and ask them to recomend a hair supplement to prevent tangles. You don't have to go shorter just maybe thin it out. YOu are possibly feeling resentful that your parents won't let you cut your hair..Unfortunately they are wrong and you are right but at your age not much you can do except hack at it again....I am sorry do your best to comply and find a product to help with the mess.

I don't really know the texture of her hair but you could try using a scarf to cover her hair after she brushes it. Brush her hair then put it in a ponytail or just twist it up. That way she won't mess it up if she is laying down or in the house playing. As long as you leave it exposed it will always get tangled. That is what I do and I have long hair. I only take my scarf off when I leave the house.

Start brushing from the bottom up. my hair is long and i hate to brush it, to keep my self from cutting the length off i got long layers. I am damned arrogant about my hair, cuz it's down to my hips and as healthy as ever. Leave her hair ratty for the week, and then comb it, roughly like my mother did. Sooner or later she's going to want to brush it on her own. Hahha. Then give her biosilk after every shower, or some detangling conditioner, and let her part it and bring it to the front and brush from the bottom up to the scalp with a wide, soft cushioned brush. She mightl like the slow, gentle sensation of the brush on her scalp and the smell of the biosilk, if you don't rush her into brushing it. Let it take some time, if she has to keep it long. Or let her cut it short, and do the same thing and it'll still be healthy if she's too lazy to brush it cuz of the biosilk.
