How do i go about getting the medium long length surfer hair?

my hair is weird.........its short on the top and on the sides.....when it starts to grow the sides stick out longer then the top............now i want to start getting a punkish longer hair look like the surfers........how do i go about cutting my hair to get that? and how long will it take?

Let a pro do it. Get a "short" layered cut on the top %26amp; sides. If you want the back all one length, that would be fine but you may want the back cut into shorter layers too.
