My cat has long hair and every spring it gathers dense dreadlocks!!!so annoying !! SO nasty!!?

He likes to roll around on the floor cause its cooler or something.but every spring he gets these crazy dreadlocks, under his neck, on his sides, on his butt, on his back.etc. I realize it would help to brush him daily but i don't care to lavish him with that attention when all he does is bite and scratch me when i do that. regardless, is there any special technique to shaving a long -haired , bedreadlocked cat with bad attitude? Mainly, what kind of tool can i get for this? my mother and i (and my older brother) have to wrap him in a towel(immobilizing him) while we go at these tough dreadlocks with clippers or an eye brow razor thingy. Its really really tedious and we never ever hurt him but he puts up a terrible fuss!!! we just moved and he had to stay at my aunts and we just got him back. He has a freekin' toupeeof knotty hair!!! Finally, is there a painless relatively simple way of shaving a cats dreadlocks?

You may try a shedding comb that can be found at most Veterinarian's offices and I believe at Petsmart too. It is called the Furmanitor. It comes in three sizes and is fairly expensive. I just bought one for my cats and it works wonders. It is worth the money. One of the things that is great about it is that it does not scratch or hurt the animals when properly used. It loosens and removes the underlying fur that is in the process of shedding. It is a great grooming tool and is also used by professional groomers.

Here is a web link to the product:

If you are not interested in grooming you cat, you may talk to your vet or grooming institution and ask them about a "lion cut" during that shedding season.

take the cat to the groomer and have it shaved. then brush the cat daily when its hair grows back to keep it from getting matted again. long haired pets require extra maintenance

Go to a petsmart they will groom and shave your cat or go to the vet.the vet is more expensive but they would be abled to put him under if they need to they will do a better job to.

Shaving your cat is not the solution. You need to brush him whether you like it or not. Right now, since he's pretty tangly it sounds like, you might want to take him to a groomer who'll sort things out and get him to a point where you can maintain his coat. But unfortunately, you're the one who picked a long-haired cat, so it's your responsibility to properly maintain him. So brush him daily, and eventually he'll get used to it.

It sounds like you dont like the cat. How about giving it to a family who will enjoy and love him?

You need to comb him out whether you want to or not. Try just a small area and quit when he acts like he doesn't like it. Do this everyday and soon you will be able to comb him out and you won't have a problem with his fur. Also you can take him to a groomer so you won't to mess with him if you chose not to groom him. Brushing him will also help with the hairball problem. Good Luck

I know grooming may be frustrating for you, but it's an absolute must. Pin or wire brushes have metal bristles that are farther apart than regular brushes. They keep longhair cats' coats from knotting as do metal combs. Brush first with a pin brush, then with a hard or soft brush to distribute the cats' oils through his coat.DO NOT use any type of razor on your cats fur! it's skin is much to tender and you can seriously harm your cat! Look into maybe paying somone to groom him for you (maybe petsmart), they deal with aggressive cats everyday, so they'll know what to do.

You said "I realize it would help to brush him daily but i don't care to lavish him with that attention when all he does is bite and scratch me when i do that." Fist off it is your job as a pet owner to take care of your pet weather you like it or not! It is not lavishing him with attention to comb him, it is taking care of him. Maybe if you did comb him regularly he wouldn't be so fussy. Long haired cats need to be comb daily!! Also since you seem not to like your cat very much, find it a good home with people who want to take care of it. And next time get a cat (a domestic short hair) or any other animal that is maintenance free enough for you or don't be a pet owner at all if you don't want to take care of them. Good luck to you and your cat.
